Lower urinary tract problems in cats

Similar signs can have several different causes.

Lower urinary tract disease describes a group of problems involving the bladder or urethra. Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. A veterinarian may recommend urine tests and other investigations.

Record changes in litter-box use and tell the clinic whether urine is actually passing.

Common signs

Straining to urinate, frequent small amounts, blood in urine, urinating outside the litter box

When to contact a vet

Repeated straining with little or no urine can indicate a blockage. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately; do not wait for home treatment.
