Outer ear inflammation

Look beyond the itch to the underlying cause.

Otitis externa is inflammation of the outer ear canal. Allergies, parasites, foreign material, and other factors may contribute. A veterinarian examines the canal and may sample ear material to guide care.

Record which ear is affected and when signs began. Avoid putting unprescribed products into a painful ear.

Common signs

Head shaking, scratching, ear pain, odor, discharge

When to contact a vet

Seek a veterinary examination for persistent ear signs. Marked pain, a head tilt, or balance changes need prompt attention.
