Anal glands: observe before intervening

Scooting has several possible causes and deserves context.

Healthy dogs do not necessarily need routine anal-gland expression. Scooting, licking, odor, or discomfort can have different causes, so an examination is more useful than automatically squeezing the glands.

Record stool changes and the frequency of signs. Discuss weight, activity, and bowel habits with your veterinarian. Leave any necessary expression or treatment to appropriately trained professionals.
